An Introduction

Welcome to the REM Therapy Services blog!

We’re excited to finally launch our website, and today I thought I’d talk a bit more about who I am, why I started REM Therapy, and what I hope to accomplish with this blog.

My name’s Grace and I’m a Social Worker based in Markham, just north of Toronto. I completed my Bachelor of Social Work degree with King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario. I went on and got my Master of Social Work degree in 2012 from the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto, with a specialization in health and mental health, and have been working in this profession since then.  Most recently, I provide psychotherapy to people who’ve suffered traumatic personal injuries and are experiencing PTSD – issues like depression, phobias and crippling fear.  I also worked part-time at a farm, providing equine-assisted psychotherapy (a.k.a. horse therapy) to people who experience high stress and social anxiety. I’m really lucky to have had different platforms (both traditional and non-traditional avenues) to help people who feel stuck in life, overcome their challenges and move forward with greater confidence and esteem.

I started REM Therapy Services because I’m wow’ed by how well counselling and EMDR work together for mental health treatment. I’ve seen people improve and recover from symptoms after suffering for years without relief. Simply put, I really believe in the efficacy of therapy - I’ve seen lots of proof of it. Now, I want this type of therapy to be available to more people outside of downtown Toronto, so here we are.

This blog isn’t meant to be a replacement for therapy, but I am hoping it will offer some accessible mental health info in a bite-sized way. I’ll try to post on a regular basis, and experiment with readership and go from there. I’m proceeding with some caution because, I mean, do people even read blogs anymore? If yes, how many people follow their therapist’s blog? Time will tell, I suppose.

Anyway, that’s enough from me for now.  Once again a BIG WELCOME to you, thanks for stopping by, and check back once in a while for more tidbits!
